Explore New Iberia - Too Hot To Pass Up!

For a town with “New” in its name, New Iberia is very dedicated to maintaining its past. This is a town with strong ties to its history as illustrated in a beautifully restored main street and downtown area.

Enjoy the country style cooking and ambiance of Cajun cafes.

Beyond the center of the town, visitors can find history in many places, including:

  • Bayou Teche Museum
  • Shadows-on-the Teche, a pre-Civil War plantation that was occupied during the Civil War by Union soldiers and has been maintained as a record of both plantation times and the subsequent years
  • The Bayou Teche Scenic Byway offers a unique insight into Cajun culture and a chance to see what used to be the main channel of the Mississippi River
  • 71 buildings along the East Main Street Historic District that were built between 1890 and 1930

Today’s New Iberia

New Iberia is not a town stuck in the past, however. It is also a modern treasure, serving as the home to popular Pulitzer-Prize winning author James Lee Burke and the setting for his popular novels featuring fictional detective Dave Robicheaux. Additionally, religious visitors enjoy visiting the Rosary house, the largest producer of high quality religious articles including handmade rosaries and gorgeous devotional candles.

A National Historic Landmark

Still looking for another reason to stop by this lovely town? You can make a trip to the TABASCO factory, located just outside New Iberia and see the place where this popular sauce is made. And of course, as is the case for all of Louisiana’s coast, you can be confident that you will find delicious food and warm, welcoming people in New Iberia.
