Summer Math: 400 Miles of Coast x Your Family = One Epic Summer

School is out, so we'll give you a rest on the math, but some equations are crucial to the success of your vacation. For example, 400 Miles of Coastline x Your Family = One Epic Summer. Louisiana's gorgeous coastline offers 400-miles of family-friendly adventure, fishing, exploration, dining and all-around fun, from Alligators to Zydeco. The 10 Parishes that make up our storied coastline each offer the kind of wild, outdoor experiences you just can't find anyplace else. Whether you crave some time on the water (it's everywhere!), or an inland biking, hiking or eco-tour adventure, or maybe even a family foursome for golf, there are literally thousands of ways to while away part of your summer along the sparkling Louisiana Coast.

There is so much to do, in fact, that we can’t tell you about it all at once, so let's take it easy and start with some time on the water. There are few adventures more exhilarating—or more authentically “Louisiana”—than winding through the swamp by boat. Swamp tours take visitors into a remote and wild place—an exciting experience for kids and adults alike. Once afloat, visitors are surrounded by a brilliant canopy of flora with the opportunity to come face-to-face with the denizens of this unique eco-system, including nutria, otter, wild cat, black bear, exotic birds, and of course, alligators (some measuring up to a whopping 13 feet in length). Under the canopied tent of a swamp tour adventure boat, visitors are protected from wildlife draping on tree limbs as skilled captains navigate into the heart of murky waters of a Louisiana swamp and its banks.

The region’s hundreds of miles of inland waterways, marshes and lakes, as well as the Atchafalaya Basin, the largest swamp in the United States, are prime territory for paddling. Kayaking or canoeing through the marshes and waterways can be both a relaxing and exhilarating experience, offering the chance to float silently through the marsh grass taking in the view, or to catch a glimpse of the snapping turtles, deer, frogs, snakes and alligator that call these environments home. Standup paddleboarding—or SUPing—has gained popularity in Coastal Louisiana, as it offers a novel view and a bit of a physical challenge. Most parishes along the coast have kayak and canoe launch sites as well as outfitters that rent equipment or offer tours.

But, perhaps above all else, if you’re looking to reel in a real summer adventure, the Louisiana Coast is home to some of the best fishing anywhere in the world. Louisiana’s 3,000 miles of shoreline (including marshes, lakes and swamps along the 400-mile Gulf Coast) give even the most avid fisherman an unrivaled experience. The lakes, marshes, and gulf waters of the coast offer some of the most liberal catch limits in the country, meaning anglers can collect more fish than in any other place in the continental United States. Redfish, Snapper and even Yellowtail Tuna can be had in the deeper waters off the coast while Refish, Trout, Flounder and Tripletail are abundant in the lakes and marshes along the coastline. Sometimes, though, it’s not about the catch. It’s about the time spent together, relaxing on the water and letting summer just pour over you and your family. So, get a license, book a charter and get out on the water!
