Coastal Louisiana Is an Angler’s Paradise Freshwater and Saltwater Fishing

Louisiana Coast, May 2014 – Whether cruising down a bayou or heading out for an exhilarating offshore charter boat adventure, anglers of all ages and experience levels will find exceptional fishing all along the Louisiana Coast. In fact, 3,000 miles of shoreline, ample sources of freshwater, millions of acres of marsh, and the fertile waters of the Gulf of Mexico mean that coastal Louisiana boasts some of the best and most diverse fishing in the world.


Louisiana offers heart pounding, hard fighting tuna fishing action year-round. As one of the greatest fisheries in the entire world, the blue water south of Louisiana contains an enormous variety of fish species such as yellowfin, blackfin and bluefin tuna. From New Orleans, to Grand Isle, Lake Fourchon and Venice Louisiana, there are hundreds of available charting boats with experienced captains and crews that have spent a lifetime fishing the Gulf of Mexico, in the deep waters, and around the many oil platforms.

As professional bass anglers will attest, the bass fishing in southern Louisiana is truly world class. Sometimes weighing in at 20 pounds or more, impressive numbers largemouth bass can be found in numerous southern Louisiana, especially in and around the Venice area located in Plaquemine’s Parish. Its smaller cousin, the smallmouth bass, can weigh about 10 pounds or slightly more. It is known for its impressive jumps and darting runs when landed on the end of a fishing line.

Recognized as an amazing paradise for sportsmen, the Louisiana coastline is known to have the best offshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Numerous saltwater species are available year-round, drawing anglers to the cobalt blue seawater just south of Louisiana.

Chartering a Boat

While fishing is often a “do it yourself” sport, the best way to ensure a great day on the water is to hire one of Louisiana’s many charter captains  to take you to where the fish are.  There are a large variety of charter boat fishing services available from the East, Central and West coastlines of Louisiana. These include Venice, Port Fourchon, and Grand Isle. Booking a charter service to catch a large number of fish species is simple. Many of these fishing trips can be chartered for eight, 12 or 14 hours. Some companies even offer overnight or multi-day fishing trips to deep water locations.

Each year, the International Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo is a fishing tournament held during the last weekend in July,  with this year’s dates being Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28. To those living in the state of Louisiana, the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo is known as being one giant block party, with plenty of music, live entertainment and great food.
