Can’t Miss Dining Options in Vermilion Parish

Vermilion Parish is located to the south of Lafayette, Louisiana. It is home to Palmetto Island State Park and White Lake, along with the cities of Kaplan and Abbeville. Situated just to the east of Vermilion Bay, the parish is often referred to as “the most Cajun location on the planet”. For nearly two centuries, Vermilion Parish has been populated with individuals making the most out of the farmlands and bayous in the area. They provide an authentic local diverse cuisine and hold annual family-friendly events and festivals. The languages spoken in Vermilion County include English and French, along with the touch of Creole and Cajun style tongue.

Vermilion Parish offers a variety of cuisine dishes including American, Asian, Creel, Cajun and Mexican. Here are some of the “can’t miss” dining options in Vermilion Parish:

Dupuy’s Oyster Shop

Located on Main St., in Abbeville, Louisiana, Dupuy’s Oyster Shop was first established back in 1869. It is recognized as one of the area’s most popular restaurants. Many locals enjoy Dupuy’s oysters (on the half shell). They also serve New Orleans style po’ boy sandwiches, pastas and steak and seafood specialties, along with the daily special. The menu is a traditional Cajun cuisine, with a touch of Creole.

The Family Diner

Located on Veterans Memorial Dr. (Highway 14), in Kaplan, Louisiana, the Family Diner serves traditional Cajun Creole style food. They are recognized for having some of the best fried oyster sandwiches in all of Vermilion Parish. In addition they serve traditional American fare including hamburgers, fried chicken and seafood platters. Many of the locals in the Kaplan area enjoy the family diner. Its casual style family-friendly environment is dining at its best in southern Louisiana.

Guidry’s Crawfish & Drive Thru

Offering traditional Cajun and Creole seafood dishes, Guidry’s Crawfish & Drive Thru

is located on Veterans Memorial Dr., in Abbeville Louisiana. The drive-through restaurant serves traditional seafood lunches every Friday. Their standard fare includes down home cooking with familiar meat and seafood entrées and desserts. Boiled crawfish is available each year during season (January – June), every day except Sunday and Monday. Many of the locals in Vermilion Parish enjoy Guidry’s Crawfish & Drive Thru, because the delicious seafood selections are always cooked and ready to go.

Stelly’s Boiling Spot

Stelly’s Boiling Spot is located on Veterans Memorial Dr., in Abbeville, in Vermilion Parish. This restaurant provides drive-through service. Their menu includes crabs, shrimp and crawfish (when in season). They offer a standard Creole and Cajun menu, seasoned just the way southern Louisiana residents enjoy.

Azul Tequila Mexican Restaurant

The Azul Tequila Mexican Restaurant is located on Veterans Memorial Dr. in Abbeville, Louisiana. Serving quality Mexican food for years, this restaurant offers a daily buffet. They are known for their authentic Mexican food, spicy seafood and steaks. The locals recognize that Azul Tequila serves the best margaritas in the area. In addition, every Friday night during the dinner hours they provide live music.

The indigenous individuals that now call the area known as Vermilion Parish their home have been here for thousands of years. First settled by the Spanish and then the French, in the 16th and 17th century, Vermilion Parish is home to a variety of cities and towns including Abbeville, Erath, Gueydan, Kaplan and Maurice. These towns and cities are located along the northern part of the parish. In addition, there are many unincorporated areas farther south including Boston, Forked Island, Henry, Leroy, LeBlanc, Pecan Island and Intercoastal City, along with Indian Bayou, Perry and Chartogne.

Many visitors and local residents enjoy the rich neighborly dining experiences along the southern Louisiana coastline, which includes Creole and Cajun specialties.
